ATSER To Provide Engineering Services To Tacoma Narrows Bridge Project
ATSER has been selected by the Washington Department of Transportation to provide professional engineering and quality management services for the Tacoma Narrows Bridge Project in Tacoma, Washington. This 849 million dollar project will add a second suspended bridge crossing over the Tacoma Narrows waterway located some 30 miles southwest of Seattle. ATSER is honored to serve on this prestigious project.
The original Tacoma Narrows suspension bridge constructed in the late Œ30s was revolutionary in its design and historic in its collapse. A large windstorm on November 7, 1940 caused severe and disastrous failure of the bridge deck and marked the end of a trend in bridge engineering towards a maximum of lightness, grace and flexibility. This catastrophic event has become a classic case study in aerodynamic instability, one that is still reviewed by most civil engineering curriculums.
